An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops on an ovary. They’re very common and do not usually cause any symptoms. The vast majority of ovarian cysts are non-cancerous (benign), although a small number are cancerous (malignant).
Most ovarian cysts are called functional as they are linked to normal ovarian activity and go away in a few months without needing any treatment. Large benign ovarian cysts can cause symptoms and might warrant surgical treatment.
Ovarian cysts can be pathological (malignant) when they result from abnormal cell growth; these are much less common but should be removed immediately.
Ovarian cysts can also be linked to endometriosis.
